Medical University - Sofia has currently a large network of international mobility agreements and Memorandum of Understandings in all Europe, Central and Southeast Asia, and Japan. Additionally there are education export agreements with Cyprus and Switzerland. Signing an agreement is one step in partnership and defines the type of cooperation we do with our partners.

According to the new internal rules for Erasmus+ program the new deadlines are:
June 15th  - for the winter semester or a whole academic year;
December 1st   -  for the summer semester.


Medical University of Sofia has won a project for the exchange of Erasmus lecturers and students with the University of Hiroshima, Japan for the academic year 2016/17. In connection with the implementation of the project activities, during the period from July 1 to July 8, 2017, three lecturers realized an Erasmus Mobility for Teaching at the University of Hiroshima:

Prof. Dr. Radoslav Girchev, MD, DSc. and Chief Assistant Professor Dr. Nikolay Ichshtiev, MD, PhD, from the Faculty of Medicine and Chief Assist. Professor Dr. Nikolay Apostolov, MD, PhD, from the Faculty of Dental Medicine.

Prof. Dr. Radoslav Girchev, MD, DSc in seminar hall 1, in the building of Basic and Sociomedical Research, at the University of Hiroshima delivered lectures presenting the structure and curricula of the Medical University - Sofia, including the educational objectives and the learning outcomes of Physiology training as required by the Bologna Process. He also presented the ERASMUS credit mobility at the Medical University of Sofia with the industrialized partner countries of the 13 region. During a seminar organized by Professor Hideya Yamamoto, he presented a scientific report entitled "Effects of Newly Synthetized Nociceptin Analogues Modified in Ninth Position on the Sympatho-Vagal Balance in Spontaneously Hypertensive Rats." During his stay, Prof. Girchev visited the Department of Cardiovascular Research, headed by Professor Iasuki Kihara, the Functional Research Laboratory headed by Prof. Higashi and the Department of Physiology at the Medical Faculty, where, in a conversation with Prof. Massao Oocusumi and his Collaborators exchanged ideas for future scientific cooperation. As Head of the International Integration and Project Funding department, he is involved in the selection procedure development for Erasmus students from the University of Hiroshima, including the selection criteria and the preparation of the documents required by the Program. Prof. Girchev participated in the interview for selection of Erasmus students and in this connection he also met the Dean of the Faculty of Dentistry, Prof. Kuichi Kot, to discuss the admissions of students of dentistry at Medical University - Sofia.

Chief Assist. Professor Dr. Nikolay Ishkitiev, MD, PhD, delivered lectures on "Potential for Differentiation of Stem Cells in the Dental District". During his Erasmus stay Dr. Ishkitiev attended the Department of Biomaterials, the Department of Biochemistry headed by Professor Chisa Sukunami, the Department of Oral Biology and Engineering of Prof. Hiroki Nikava, with whom they exchanged views on future cooperation.

Chief Assist. Professor Dr. Nikolay Apostolov, MD, PhD delivered lectures on "Prosthetic adhesives - application and necessity", held meetings with the Dean of the Faculty of Dental Medicine - Prof. Kuichi Kato and the Head of the Department of Oral Physiology Prof. Sugita, with whom discussed the possibilities for collaborative research projects.

The lectures were attended by more than 300 students and professors from the Medical Faculty of the University of Hiroshima.

Within their Erasmus stay they also visited the hospital complex of the University of Hiroshima.
During their visit to Hiroshima, Prof. Dr. Radoslav Girchev, MD, DSc., Chief Assist. Professor Dr. Nikolay Ishkitiev and Chief Assist. Dr. Nikolay Apostolov also met with the members of the Friendship Society between Hiroshima and Bulgaria, where they were welcomed by a letter from the Foreign Minister of Japan, Fuimo Chischi.

How to Apply 

If you wish to study at MU-Sofia as an Erasmus student for a semester or a whole academic year,
please read carefully the following step-by-step information:

1. Contact the International Office of your home university to find out whether your university has a Bilateral Agreement with MU-Sofia for the respective academic year. (You can also refer to our List of Partner universities).

2. If there is such an agreement you have to be officially nominated by your university as an Erasmus student.

3. We have to receive the following filled in documents:

Please inform us about the exact date and time of your arrival and we or a student of our university will meet you.
 If you wish to study Bulgarian language we will arrange a course for you at the Department of Foreign Language Training at our university.

International Training Opportunities

Forschungszentrum Karlsruhe’s training centre has been delivering high quality training on an international level for more than 10 years. The target group for our programmes is research managers or administrators in a university, research centre or private industry research department in Europe. They take part in targeted and effective training on a wide range of subjects relevant to their work. And they also have the opportunity to take up and discuss their own individual issues.

Our quality management system ensures that we are able to meet the high standards you require. We have been on the market for about 50 years and carry out more than 950 training courses with over 12 500 participants per year. This means that we have a proven capability to match your international training needs.

Visit of Erasmus Teaching Staff from University of Hiroshima, Japan

The Medical University of Sofia has won a project for the exchange of Erasmus teachers and students with the University of Hiroshima, Japan for the academic year 2016/17. In connection with the implementation of the project activities, three teachers arrived from 15 May to 19 May 2017 and an expert from the International Department, the organizer of Erasmus Mobility on their behalf. Prof. Tajiro Sueda presented lectures on Surgical therapy for atrial fibrillation at the "Maxima" Aula of university hospital "Saint Ekaterina".

The following lectures were presented at the Anatomy Auditorium at the Medical Faculty:
Prof. Takemasha Sakaguchi - on the subject: Microbiology, Virology. Perspectives of replication and pathogenicity of mammalian viruses such as influenza viruses, hepatitis viruses and herpes viruses. Current status of vaccines and drugs against viruses.
Prof. Norio Sakai - on the topic: regulation of serotonin transporter (SERT) function via its membrane trafficking.
The lectures were attended by more than 350 students and lecturers from the Medical Faculty of the Medical University - Sofia. Within Erasmus period, they visited the university hospitals: “St. Catherine” and "St. Ivan Rilski", the cell signaling transduction laboratory at the Department of Medical Chemistry and Biochemistry at the Faculty of Medicine.  At Faculty of Dental Medicine they met with the Vice Rector for International Integration and Project Financing -                                             Prof. Dr. Radomir Ugrinov, MD, DSc. With the head of the Department of International Integration and Project Financing - Prof. Dr. Radoslav Girchev, MD, DSc, including the experts from Erasmus Office, discussed the Internal Rules for Administration of Erasmus Mobility between the two Universities, the procedures for selecting students for exchanges. Meetings with university lecturers and students were organized, as well as they participated in training on the "Sophisticated Medical Teacher in a Multicultural Environment" according the project’s program.

Bilateral Cooperation


The Rector of the Medical University – Sofia - Prof. Vanyo Mitev, MD, PhD, DSc, and the Rector of the National University of Pharmacy (Kharkov, Ukraine) Prof. Valentin Petrovich Chenikh have signed a co-operation agreement  on April 4th 2009. The aims of the agreement are as follows: 


creation of favorable conditions for the development of the pharmaceutical education and science, development of mutual educational programs, implementation of new pharmaceutical technologies, organizing of science conferences, exchange of students and lecturers, etc.


On 30 September 2011 a Co-operation Memorandum was signed between the Medical University-Sofia and the Korean University /Seoul/, one of the leading universities in Asia.

The Korean University was founded in the distant 1905 and is one of the oldest and with a good reputation university in Korea.

For the moment the University unites 22 colleges, 23 higher schools /including medical one with a medical centre/ and 124 research centers and has 35 000 students. The higher schools of medicine, law and business administration are the most renowned, with the best quality and the highest rating.

The official document signed enables both institutions to actively co-operate in the field of education and research. It can also be a legal foundation for other contracts about exchange of students and lecturers and co-operation on international projects.


In September 2011 a Co-operation memorandum was signed between the Medical University-Sofia and Yonsei University College of Medicine – Republic of Korea.

The Yonsei University College of Medicine was found in the distant 1885 by the American missionary Dr Allan – in the beginning as a hospital and later as a Higher Medical School. Right now this University is one of the most reputed universities not only in the Republic of Korea, but also in Asia and is among the top 100 Universities according to the World University ranking.

The co-operation memorandum period is five years. It provides exchange of lecturers and students between institutions, participation in research projects, organization of international scientific events, and development of joint academic programs.


The Rector of the Medical University – Sofia - Prof. Vanyo Mitev, MD, PhD, DSc,  and the Rector of the Ukrainian Medical Stomatological Academy (Poltava, Ukraine) Prof. Dr. Viacheslav Nikolaevich Jdan, have signed a Memorandum of understanding on April 11th, 2009 in the sphere of education and science research between the two institutions. This Memorandum facilitates all mutual activities in the aspect of education, faculty and student exchange, science research and public services.


During a preparatory working meeting held at the end of August 2010 in “Golden Sands”, an invitation was extended to the Medical University-Sofia, represented by the Rector, Professor Vanyo Mitev, to be co-founder of the Alliance for Oral Health Across Borders.

The first symposium and signing of the Constitutive Charter of the Alliance for Oral Health Across Borders took place on the 3d and 4th August 2011 in the Temple University – Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA.

The representatives of the Medical University-Sofia – Professor Dr Radomir Ugrinov – Vice-Rector and Professor Dr Radoslav Girchev – Head of International Integration and University Policy Department - signed the Constitutive Charter.

Delegates from 20 countries and 20 deans of faculties of dental medicine in the USA signed the Charter of the Alliance for Oral Health Across Borders and   committed themselves to the actions and purposes of the Alliance for creation of “bridges to peace through oral health”, part of the general health, improvement of the people’s welfare all over the world and development of the international co-operation between the Alliance’s participants.

Австрийско-Български летен колеж ‘2006

Благоприятна възможност за езиково обучение

Дванадесетият Австрийско-Български летен колеж дава благоприятна възможност на студенти от България и Австрия да изучават езика на другата страна. В програмата ще бъдат включени по 20 студенти от България и от Австрия. Разходите за обучение, нощувки, закуска и обяд, екскурзии, се осигуряват чрез стипендия на Австрийското федерално министерство за образование, наука и култура.

Летният колеж ще се проведе във Варна и Велико Търново и е с продължителност 3 седмици. В преподаването се прилагат интерактивни методи за изучаване на чужди езици. Всекидневните контакти с австрийските участници гарантират приложение на наученото веднага. Екскурзиите до туристически обекти и беседите на актуални теми са предпоставка за интересни и полезни дискусии, както и за по-доброто взаимно опознаване в неформална среда.

Изисквания към кандидатите:
1. Да са редовни студенти от всички специалности, с изключение на филологически с изучаване на немски език.
2. Да са изпратили в срок следните документи за кандидатстване:

• СV – обем 1 страница
• Актуална академична справка (копие или оригинал)
• Копие от дипломата за средно образование или документ, доказващ изучаването на немски език от изкарани курсове – ниво, брой часове

Нe се допускат за включване студенти, които следват немска филология, завършилите немска гимназия или гимназия с усилено изучаване на немски език. Ще бъда приемани само студенти, изучавали немски език от 150 до 500 учебни часа!

Ежегодно правителството на Финландия провежда международен конкурс и отпуска стипендии за следдипломно обучение, специализация или научни изследвания за чужденци, чиито кандидатури са официално представени от правителствата на техните държави. МОН  обявява конкурс по документи за номиниране на българските кандидати за учебната 2006/2007 г.

Ежегодно правителството на Кралство Норвегия провежда международен конкурс и отпуска стипендии за следдипломно обучение или специализация за чужденци, чиито кандидатури са официално прествани от правителствата на техните държави. МОН обявява конкурс по документи за номиниране на българските кандидати за учебната 2006/2007 г.

Шведският институт обявява конкурс за стипендии за гостуващи студенти и изследователи в шведски университети и колежи за академичната 2006/2007 г. Български граждани могат да кандидатстват индивидуално, в рамките на международен конкурс. Няма национални квоти.

СОКРАТ е най-голямата образователна програма на Европейската Общност, предназначена да допринася за развитието на образованието и за създаването на отворена Европейска област за сътрудничество във всички степени на образованието. Създаването на програма СОКРАТ се основава на чл. 149 и чл. 150 от Договора за ЕС. Член 149 посочва, че Общността "ще допринася за развитието на качествено образование" чрез широк кръг от действия, които ще бъдат осъществявани в тясно сътрудничество със страните-членки.

Първата фаза на програмата - СОКРАТ I, обхваща периода 1995-2000 година. С решение на Европейския парламент и Съвета на министрите от 24 януари 2000 г. програмат продължава чрез втората си фаза СОРАТ II - от 1 януари 2000 г. до 31 декемрви 2006 година. Въз основа на опита, натрупан по време на работата по СОКРАТ I и от предишните, чисто донорски програми като ФАР и ТЕМПУС, втората фаза на програмата цели да интегрира страните- участнички в най-голямата схема за европейско образователно и културно сътрудничество, съществувала някога.

Основните цели на програма СОКРАТ II, както е посочено в решението за учредяването й са:

  • Да развива и утвърждава европейската образователна система на всичките й нива;
  • Да осигури равноправен достъп до образователните ресурси на Европа във всички сфери на образованието;
  • Да спомогне за качествено и количествено подобряване на владеенето на чужди езици в ЕС, най-вече когато се отнася до по-малко използваните езици;
  • Да поощрява сътрудничеството и мобилността в сферата на образованието.

В процеса на работа по осъществяването  на тези цели, програмата насърчава равноправието между половете и прилагането на равни възможности по отношение на хората с увреждания, съдейства за борбата срещу социалната неравнопоставеност, расизма и ксенофобията.

Програма СОКРАТ подкрепя следните видове дейности:

  • Разширяване и насърчаване на европейското сътруднимчество в областта на образованието;
  • Проекти за развитие на приложението на иновациите в образованието;
  • Развитие на езиковите умения и преодоляване на културните различия;
  • Използване на информационни и комуникационни технологии в образованието;
  • Наблюдение и сравнителен анализ на образователните системи и политики в областта на образованието;
  • Дейности за размяна на информация и иновации.

Страни-участнички в програмата:

  •  25-те страни от ЕС: Австрия, Белгия, Дания, Финландия, Франция, Германия, Гърция, Ирландия, Италия, Испания, Люксембург, Латвия, Литва, Естония, Великобритания, Швеция, Холандия, Португалия, Чехия, Унгария,  Полша, Словакия, Словения, Кипър и Малта.
  • 3-те страни, участващи в Европейската свободна зона за търговия: Исландия, Лихтенщайн и Норвегия.
  • 3-те асоциирани държави: България, Румъния и Турция.

Република България е член на програма ССОКРАТ от април 1999 година.
